Chapter 12

FREYA SNAPPED OUT OF her horrified daze and realized the dilemma they were in. She spun to Sam, panicked, and yelled, “Disappear! Now!”

Sam looked hurt, but Freya didn’t let it distract her. “Listen, you can’t stay here. I know you want to help out, but believe me, you’re only going to get in the way. Please, go!”

The ghost hesitated for another beat, his eyes flickering to Seamus, then Brennan. Their expressions both reflected the same message so he did as they pleaded. The last thing Freya saw of him was his resigned features dissipating into the night.

She then eyed Brennan.

“Are you sure about this? There’s still time to back away – for you, at least.”

Brennan narrowed his eyes as though offended, then his expression relaxed. His smile, however, didn’t reach his darkened brown eyes. “You kidding? I can’t wait to kick some butt!”

So I was right, Freya thought. He’s one of us – a Sage.

She smiled to him gratefully, then took a step towards the Vikings. “Release Seamus and I promise you won’t get hurt...much.” The last part was added under her breath.

Brennan chuckled softly by her side, throwing her an amused side-glance. The Vikings shared broken-teeth grins and cackles, seemingly finding her statement hilarious.

“Or what?” The biggest of them threatened. “You’ll hurt us?” He had scarred features and pale blue eyes, and one of his arms was shorter than the other.

Freya glared at him, clenching her teeth. You’re so dead, buddy, just keep laughing.

“Go easy on him,” Brennan teased.

Without even realizing what she was doing, Freya looked over her shoulder at him and winked. She then faced their opponents.

“Give us a break, you’re a girl!” The shout came from another Viking, and a few laughs encouraged him.

“I’m astonished,” Freya rolled her eyes. “You actually have some brains to notice and state it. It’s been how long since you’ve been around females? Centuries? Must be getting rusty...”

This only enraged him. Without a warning, he launched at her, axe in hand. Emboldened by her success with the fog, Freya didn’t budge. Instead, she raised her palm towards the Viking, then closed it in a fist.

He was stopped in midair, as if paralyzed. Freya stared in awe at her hand – the upgrade in her abilities was truly amazing.

A flurry of activity raised her attention back to the group. The Vikings recovered quickly from their surprise, and launched a full-on attack. She waited until they were close, then bent her knees and launched herself in the air, propelling herself as far as she could with her leg muscles.

As the first Viking was shorter than the others, she was able to get to his height, and use his head – and his companions’ – as stairs. She hopped over them, aiming for the center where Seamus was being kept.

After a kick to the last one’s head, Freya landed in their middle, only a few feet away from Seamus. She punched, evaded and kicked her way through the remaining Vikings still in her way, and Brennan fought and kept the ones on the outside of the circle entertained.
